I have spent so much of my life held emotionally captive. I care about people, so I naturally care about what they think and how they feel. But too many of us are dysfunctional, and whether we mean to or not, we use that caring instinct to manipulate others. It's bullshit, and right now I want to take a stand against it, to break free and declare that I will not pander to the insecurities of others. Except that I truly do care about my friends, and I don't want to excise that compassionate side so completely that I become a total dickhead. Not sure what to do except to continue dancing the dance, so I put the chains back on, and bow my head, and say that I'm sorry for things I shouldn't be sorry for, just to keep the peace. =sigh=

P.S. Previous post not aimed at any on this forum. RL friends demanding more than their fair share of emotional energy. Sometimes I wish I could pause my social life, go away for a month and take care of myself and no one else, and then when I feel up to it, hit "play" again.

I third that.
I am not doing the dance any more though. Arms length for all emotional vampires. I have very much decided that life is too short and I will not give my time to those who clearly just use me to empty out on. Tis not what I am here for.
I feel for you sweetie, as it is hard to do. Like you, I tend to care too much and end up feeling crappy but then a line has to be made. Unfortunately these types have a habit of turning any distancing into more 'poor me-ness' and try to turn it around so they aint the bad guy.
What I will say it does make me super grateful for the amazing selfless caring friends I do have. That comment does include the people on here.
