To answer SBC's question, it's BBC 2's Inside Story series, the episode was called A Change of Sex and it was made in 1979. Here's the blurb

"This documentary charted the long, slow and frequently painful battle fought by 24-year-old transsexual George Roberts to get a sex change on the National Health Service. Director David Person shows not only the difficulties faced by Julia Grant prior to the operation, but also the complications that followed. You'll undoubtedly wince at some points, but also be moved when Julia emerges, post-operation, clearly in pain but overjoyed."

Hope that helps.

Weird! I've never seen it advertised as "The Guides" - but that is the translation of the "Cicerones" anyway. Mad though! Why not keep the proper name? Blummin' Film 4!

Oh dear GOD, that woman should be locked up. She is properly frightening, but you're right - I want to see the whole thing. I feel desperately sorry for her in a way too. I know we all joke about it, but we're not like that...

Kate, I'm SURE that Shaz, Liz or Sarah have got the video of the entire Tulip rose reed thing. I've certainly seen the whole thing.

I feel uncomfortable about it. Sure, Tulip is extreme to the point of psychosis, but she IS the extreme end of a fandom that most of us on here are a part of. I'm sure a lot of people think I'm a mentalist for making fan-tshirts and getting autographs at stage doors... :?

No matter what walk of life you are from or what you follow or support there is going to that extreme group of people who take it to the Nth degree..

I mean I may joke that Im an extreme and sad Doctor who fan and to a certain degree that may seem true. However there are elements of DW fandom, that treat it with reverence. You know, if something is shit, I and my friends will say its shit and laugh about it, where this extreme element will actually be disgusted that we laugh about it and lambast us for it and actually turn a bit nasty. I think when you start taking something deadly serious that is mean't to be fun, you've lost it!

As long as you can keep in your mind that its a TV show and that you can love it to death, but at the end of the day it is ONLY a TV show. You musn't lose sight of real life.

If you see what I mean!

Yep, right place this time!

The photograph that Brian picks up is of the real Keith Drop, whom Papa Lazarou has stolen the identity of. If you look at the photo closely, you'll see that he is dressed similarly to Papa's "Keith". I think it is mentioned on the commentary, although I can't say I've watched that episode for a while. The ominous music goes all through the scene if I remember rightly - I assume that it is just to set the mood as Brian starts to work out what is happening. Hope this is what you meant.

At the risk of committing:

ImageT3h D34dly Thr34d N3cr0m4ncy!!11!!Image

I have just rewatched the series having pried back the DVDs from someone who borrowed them.

Series 2 Figures: from the commentary and other bits of information it seems that the Gents have never wanted to specify "what" the special stuff is. They acknowledge that cannibalism seems obvious, but they want to keep it ambiguous. Thus the references to "pure" and "cutting it" in the next series. Is it a drug? Seems the Gents realize that part of the attraction is allowing viewers to make up their own reasons for things rather than spell it out.

So . . . the figures are just to look strange and add to the mystery. I forget which one says it in the commentary, but he denies it is Edward and a monkey! In another episode where the Film Dude visits the Local Shop--"I can I can't!"--and Edward comes out the back having done butchery--"Hello! Hello!"--one of them mentions that some fans have suggested that Edward provides Hillary with the "special stuff" from his . . . er . . . "customers!" The Gents deny that.

Thus the answer is . . . there is no answer! When you think about it, whatever answer they give will disappoint some large section of fans.

Ooh, I actually was watching the second series with commentary on last night, I think it was Steve who was talking about people who had seen the scene and thought it was Edward and a monkey.

Wikipedia does say the following:

“The only clue from the original live shows as to what the substance is that it rhymes with "drawstring", which has led some fans to believe that the "special stuff" is circumcised foreskins. Another clue is that the Hebrew for circumcision is Brit milah, which when used in every day English is known as a "Brit" or more regularly a "Briss". "

I enjoy the mystery of the Special Stuff, I really do have no idea about what it is, I think that The Gents do all these random things to keep people guessing when there is no real answer as they themselves don't know. I didn't explain that very well, I've not had enough tea

Veedddy . . . vedddy . . . INtewesting!!!

The term "bris"--ברית--is also used since the final letter--taw--ת--has a "th" sound . . . so sort of a "brith" sound.

I rather thought Hillary's last name was just a coincidence.

Interesting. . . .

Can anyone tell me who Illarrio Bisi Pedro played in LOFG? He is at a Doctor Who signing for a DVD that is being released that (Four to Doomsday) he is in and in the bio of him says he has appeared in League, but I can't fathom whereabouts and who he played!

He played the receptionist at the Hotel Savaloy in 'Turn Again Geoff Tipps'. :)

The hotel reception still has that disgusting flock wallpaper up, too. I took pictures a few years ago when I was peering through the window...

Which Of The Gentlemen Have Lived Together?

I know that Mark has lived with Steve at some point.

Reece has lived with Steve.

Who else lived with who?
